East Midlands Devolution
East Midlands councils have put forward plans for a shared mayoral authority.
The proposal is being put together by Derby City Council, Derbyshire County Council, Nottingham City Council, and Nottinghamshire County Council, and has so far been welcomed by Government.
If successful, the first mayoral elections could take place in 2024. Nottingham City Council Leader, Councillor David Mellen, said: “Our devolution plans are about bringing in much needed investment, giving our region a bigger voice, and having more major decisions made locally.”
Cannock Chase Council Shakeup
Cannock Chase could reduce its number of councillors from 41 to 36 as part of a ward boundary review suggested by the Local Government Boundary Commission.
If approved, the review would substantially change the political landscape of Cannock Chase. The consultation will run until August 1.
Sandwell Council’s Improvement Plan
With six leaders in the last six years and three Chief Executives in the last three years, the Government has appointed Commissioners to ensure the authority is run effectively over the next two years.
Leader of the Council, Councillor Kerrie Carmichael (Lab), who took over in November, has outlined a Sandwell Council Improvement Plan. This includes improvements to the culture of the organisation, stronger corporate oversight, more strategic direction, and better decision making.
