Burnham begins.

The transition has begun. Who’s running it, what he’ll do, and what it means for business.

Nominations have opened, and the race is over on paper. Three weeks after Keir Starmer resigned, there is no contest left to have. Wes Streeting and Darren Jones stood aside long ago. Al Carns – the last figure with a plausible route to the ballot – pulled out on Wednesday.

On the first day of nominations, 322 of 402 Labour MPs put their names behind Burnham: one short of the 323 that makes a challenge mathematically impossible, and expected to tip over within days as MPs return. The sequence is fixed. Burnham is confirmed Labour leader on 17th July and enters Downing Street on 20th July. Government is on pause until he takes office: no major policy, no new spending. Decisions sitting in Whitehall wait to be made.

This report is your map of the transition: the situation, the process that makes him PM, the people who will run his government, the policies he’s signalled, and what it all means for you.
