Securing consent for development on Maidenhead Golf Course.
Background
Cavendish has recently completed three years work in the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead to secure outline permission for Cala Homes on its strategic development site in Maidenhead, a site owned by the Council and taken through the Borough Local Plan process for release from the Green Belt.
Strategy
This was a high-profile project which involved two meetings with the former UK Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon Theresa May while she was still the local Member of Parliament.
There was also regional TV and radio coverage by the BBC and other media outlets and Cavendish provided media training for the senior team and arranged a briefing with the editor of the local newspaper.
We had to manage the interest in the site from the radical environmental group Extinction Rebellion which had been protesting outside the Council Offices. There was also an application to secure Asset of Community Value (ACV) designation by the local campaign group.
We held two rounds of public consultation on the proposals in 2022 and 2023 and then assisted the client to navigate the change of political control which took place in May 2023.
Throughout the period of May 2023 to May 2025 we monitored political developments at the Council and the comments of the new local MP.
We also helped the client navigate the composition of the specially constituted Maidenhead Development Management Committee formed to determine the application in February 2025. The application was approved by the special committee following several hours of debate.
