Background

Cavendish works with SEGRO to deepen relations with influential cross-party stakeholders and secure a positive national policy environment for SEGRO to operate in. Our work centres around making politicians aware of the vital nature of the industrial and logistics sector across Westminster and Whitehall – as the UK’s leading provider of industrial infrastructure – to the UK’s economic and wider ambitions.

How we assistedArrow

How we assisted

The industrial and logistics sector is often undervalued and overlooked by policymakers. Cavendish began working with SEGRO in 2022 and have supported the business in clarifying what their asks are of Government and how to make these relevant to an ever-changing political landscape.

Critical to this has been making politicians aware of the role of the sector in providing the industrial infrastructure to create high value jobs, drive innovation and boost productivity across the UK. We have supported SEGRO in demonstrating to stakeholders the value of logistics and what is required to break down the barriers to growth that the sector faces.

To do so, we’ve engaged directly with politicians, Government consultations, Parliamentary Committees and relevant All-Party Parliamentary Groups (APPGs) and Special Advisers.

We’ve also worked in partnership with thinktank Demos to produce a report which underscores the importances of the sector and the policy solutions required to support the growth of industrial infrastructure.

The results

We have defined the challenges and opportunities for SEGRO in terms of three core workstreams and have identified and engaged with the key stakeholders of relevance to each, delivering consistent, valuable engagement for the client. With an average of one meeting every month with a key national political stakeholder, we’ve supported SEGRO to engage with Government officials, Ministers and Shadow Ministers, Special Advisers, as well as relevant Committee and APPG members.

Engagement driven by Cavendish helped to open up a strong relationship between SEGRO and the Chief Planner and her team at Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC). This saw the Chief Planner take a half-day tour of SEGRO sites in 2023 – the first such tour the Chief Planner had been on.

December 2023 saw the launch of the SEGRO sponsored Demos report ‘Powering the Superpower’. The report launch was hosted by a panel of experts, including two Shadow Ministers and attended by key figures from DLUHC. The report is now a driving focus for SEGRO’s political stakeholder engagement plan across 2024 and has been socialised amongst No10 Special Advisers, among other stakeholders.
