Attitudes to Net Zero
A General Election will take place in 2024 and how parties approach Net Zero is set to be a core differentiator. In partnership with YouGov, we explored MPs’ and the public’s perceptions of Net Zero.
Net Zero is being used as a wedge issue in politics.
In partnership with YouGov, we explored MPs’ and the public’s perceptions of:
- Net Zero and the likelihood of achieving the 2050 target.
- How Net Zero policies impact household finances.
- Net Zero policies during the cost-of-living crisis.
- What energy sources should be prioritised.
- What the public is willing to change about their behaviour.
There is currently no clear direction of travel on the issue – the UK’s climate strategy was deemed unlawful in 2022 and the updated version is still subject to legal challenge. More recently, Rishi Sunak rolled back on a number of Net Zero policies.
The Labour Party also remains unsure on how to finalise plans for green investment, having slowed down its original £28bn a year green jobs and industry investment plans.
This demonstrates the complexity and uncertainty surrounding Net Zero policy creation.
The main political parties aren’t aligned with each other or within themselves about the best routes to Net Zero. So understanding their current thinking and preferences is crucial to engage with them.
