Attitudes towards HFSS & Packaging Waste
New polling suggests Labour MP’s and the public want more intervention to reduce waste and fatty food consumption.
The past 13 years of Conservative-led government has generally seen an anti-interventionist approach towards encouraging positive behaviour change.
We have a general election coming in the next six to twelve months, and there have been strong indications that Labour might take a more interventionist stance in government: as Shadow Food Minister, Daniel Zeichner, said at the Party Conference, “Labour just is more likely to intervene in markets”.
Despite this, and probably because of their desire to court business, the Labour leadership has avoided making clear its intentions around intervention and has been fairly tight-lipped regarding intervention on unhealthy foods and packaging waste.
Cavendish works with a number of clients with keen interests in this area, and so we wanted to test public and political appetite on a number of products and packaging options. That’s why we partnered with leading pollsters YouGov to gauge how supportive MPs and the public are on the idea of bans or taxes.
You can find out more about the response for high fat, sugar and salt (HFSS) foods and packaging waste in our sector specific blogs linked below but one thing is clear – Labour MPs are much more likely to be supportive of intervention than their Conservative opponents and, what’s more, the public is on their side.
