Going for Green: The future of Northern Ireland energy

Do politicians and the public agree on Northern Ireland’s Net Zero prospects?

Energy security and decarbonising our energy supply are amongst the biggest global issues of our time.

The NI Executive has ambitious plans about making Northern Ireland self-sufficient in affordable renewable energy. But are the public and their representatives onboard?

Last year, we published a report which demonstrated that there is huge public backing in Northern Ireland to deliver new renewable energy projects across the country.

Building on this, and working with leading Northern Ireland polling company LucidTalk, we have polled Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) to allow us to present the first analysis of whether the Northern Irish public and their representatives are aligned on this crucial topic.

Our results show that:

  • Overall amongst MLAs and the NI public there is strong support for certain sources of renewable energy.
  • They overwhelmingly back offshore wind, tidal, solar, biomass, and hydrogen projects.
  • Only 33% of MLAs believe Northern Ireland will hit Net Zero by 2050, with the public even more doubtful.
  • 56% of MLAs think Net Zero policies shouldn’t proceed if they negatively impact household finances.
