Northern Ireland and the future of energy.
What do people think?
Energy security and decarbonising our energy supply are amongst the biggest global issues of our time.
Northern Ireland, traditionally an importer of fossil fuels to power its homes and businesses, is no different.
Northern Ireland’s Department for the Economy has made reaching net zero by 2050 one of its four key strategic priorities.
Working with LucidTalk, Cavendish polled the public in Northern Ireland to understand their perspectives on net zero, the likelihood of reaching it and the relative popularity of different energy sources.
Our results show that:
80% of the public in Northern Ireland support the development of wind, solar and hydro energy in their area.
11% think Northern Ireland can reach net zero by 2050.
47% of the Northern Ireland public only want to pursue net zero policies if it doesn’t hit their finances.
Later in 2024 we’ll conduct similar research on MLAs, the first analysis of whether the Northern Irish public and representatives are aligned on this crucial topic.
