Background

We have been working with British Land on their heritage-led commercial scheme in Spitalfields since 2013, providing support through planning, subsequent legal challenges, and during construction.

Located in one of London’s most historic quarters – based around the almost perfectly preserved Georgian street, Elder Street – Blossom Street presented a significant challenge with high profile heritage lobby groups implacably opposed to the proposed development. The media presence was high, with the development appearing in most mainstream newspapers during the planning process.

Strategy

We successfully navigated the controversy generated by local stakeholders, delivering an in-depth and detailed community engagement programme, alongside British Land’s first ever use of social media during the planning process, to secure support from members of the local community that counterbalanced and damaged the opposition’s claim to have universal community support for their campaign.

Ultimately, one of our local supporters provided an in-person deputation to the Mayor of London at the planning hearing, challenging the oppositional narrative from others, and helping to secure consent for the scheme.

We have since coordinated the communications through construction, helping to keep local stakeholders informed and involved as the site has been sensitively developed.
